1. General Information
Wang Zhengzhong, male, was born in December 1963 in Binxian County of Shaaxi Province. He is a professor and doctoral supervisor. He graduated from Department of Water Resources of Northwest A & F University and was granted Bachelor’s Degree in 1986, and he has been working in Northwest A & F University since then. He was promoted to professor in December 1997, and was appointed as doctoral supervisor of Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering discipline in June 2003.
Currently, he works as Vice Dean of College of Water Resource and Architectural Engineering, Director of Research Center of Water Engineering Safety and Disaster Prevention, Vice Director of Experimental Center of Northwest Water Resources Research Institute, Vice Stationmaster of Center Station of Hydraulic Engineering Quality Inspection of Shaanxi Province, etc. He is also a member of ASCE, Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society, the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, China Society for Hydropower Engineering, Director of Shaanxi Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Commissary of Stability and Fatigue Committee of Chinese Steel Structure Association, Visiting Scholar of Tsinghua University, Bidding Evaluation Expert and Jury of Professional Judging Panel of key hydraulic engineering projects in Shaanxi Province, Vice Chairman of Association of urban and rural water supply in Shaanxi Province, Communication Evaluation Expert of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Evaluation Expert of outstanding scientific and technological journals of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, and Evaluation Expert of comprehensive agricultural development projects run by the Ministry of Finance People’s Republic of China. He is a member of Editorial Board of periodicals, such as Journal of Water Resources and Water Engineering, Journal of Water Resources and Architectural Engineering, etc.
2. Research Area
Professor Wang is mainly engaged in the teaching and scientific research of hydraulic structure engineering, water resources and hydropower engineering, engineering mechanics and frozen soil engineering. The current areas of expertise are as follows:
•Nonlinear numerical analysis of hydraulic structures(static and dynamic strength and stability, fluid-solid coupling vibration and dynamic stability)
•Safety assessment, theory and technology of disaster prevention in water engineering (freezing damage prevention of hydraulic structures, anti-cracking technology of faced rockfill dams )

Professor Wang was awarded the title of honor as the National Excellent Teacher in Mechanics Teaching, and Shaanxi Excellent Teacher in Mechanics and Water Resources Teaching. He obtained 5 outstanding provincial or school teaching achievement awards and 2 science and technology progress awards of water resources of Shaanxi Province. He has published 3 textbooks and developed 10 teaching aids and 6 applied softwares which were authorized by the State Patent Office.
4. Academic Achievement
The number of the projects of state key laboratory funds, hydropower science funds, natural science funds of Shaanxi Province and the horizontal cooperation projects that he has undertaken reaches over 30, such as dynamic stability of main frame in deep-hole radial steel gate, study on bending-shearing coupling of main beam in deep-hole steel gate, nonlinear analysis of ultimate bearing capacity of steel gate panel, study on viscoelastic-plastic model of orthotropic frozen soil considering the interaction between frozen soil and buildings, calculation methods in hydraulics, key technology of rural drinking water safety in Shaanxi Province, finite element analysis of Luohuiqu gravity arch dam, safety assessment of reservoirs and dams of mountain area in Guanzhong and Shanna and so on.
Based on theory and practice, Professor Wang obtained some new results as follows:
① Nonlinear mechanics model of elastic-plastic ultimate bearing capacity of steel gate
panel was established. The prototype test model proposed by Hohai University in 1976 was proved reasonable and accurate, and the analytic solution was given.
② The mechanic model of transverse bending of deep beam with complex cross-section
was established which can reveal bending-shearing coupling mechanism. Analytical formulas for computing the stresses of deep beams with different cross-sections and span-depth ratios subjected to different support restraints and load distribution were derived, and critical span-depth ratio was proposed. This model can enrich deep beam theory of S.Timoshenko and provide theoretical method for the design of deep-hole steel gate.
③ The optimal structural arrangement type, dynamic instability model of space frame and
reliability analysis of structural system of radial steel gates were proposed.
④ The mathematical model of multi-filed coupling of frozen soil considering the
interaction between frozen soil and buildings was proposed, and frozen soil was proved to be transversely isotropic material by experiment. Strain gauge was firstly used in the mechanical testing of frozen soil.
⑤ The mechanical models of frost-heaving damage of concrete lining canals with
different typical cross-sections were proposed which can reveal frost heaving resistant mechanism.
⑥ A series of simple, accurate and general analytical formulas of hydraulic calculation of
channels with different cross-sections were proposed which can provide simple calculation method for hydraulic design.
Since 1989, Professor Wang has published over 140 peer-reviewed journal articles in over 20 academic journals including Journal of Hydraulic Engineering (ASCE), Journal of Hydraulic Engineering(CHES), Journal of Hydroelectric Engineering, China Civil Engineering Journal, Mechanics Engineering, Journal of Yangtze River Scientific Research Institute, Transactions of the CSAE, Journal of Tsinghua University(Science and Technology), Chinese Journal of Applied Mechanics, Journal of Sichuan University(Engineering Science Edition), Hydro-Science and Engineering, and including 26 entering SCI or EI which were cited over 300 times. Over 30 articles were awarded by relevant professional institutions.
